I picked up the new Spin today and found a review on Jesse Malin's new LP "Glitter In The Gutter"
SPIN gave it a 1 star review. I haven't seen a 1 star review since Andrew Ridgley's "Son Of Albert" album hit shelves in 1990.
Anyway, here's what it said:
Former D Generation frontman serves corn on third album
His glam-punk roots mostly forgotton, New Yorker Malin now specializes in sentimental rock anthems that showcase his Tom Petty-like yowl. Credibility-boosting pals Ryan Adams, Josh Homme, and Bruce Springsteen (who coughs up a hairball duet vocal on the mawkish "Broken Radio") chip in, but you've heard these overheated tales of wild girls and outlaw boys many times before. An adoring version of the Replacements' "Bastards of Young" only emphasizes the generic tendencies of Malin's own material.
YIKES!

Wow.
Good thing I gave up on reviewers a long time ago and trusted my own ears. Most of them are pompous asses and I can say that because I've been one...lol.
I've been listening to the new Jesse album for about a month now in heavy rotation. It is by far his most cohesive work to date. I do agree about the duet with Springsteen...my least favorite song of the album...and even then the song is good...just not as good as the others.
A couple of breaks and this could be Jesse's breakout release. I am hoping that the new band can bring it to life, live. We shall see on March 19th.

i fucking love this album.
i'm only young, but i've managed to figure out by now that reveiwers might be useful for hearing about new names and things to check out, but very rarely can they predict how i, as an individual, am going to react (particularly emotionally) to someone's work. i'd much rather listen to something myself (and thanks to the internet and music shops that let you listen to stuff before buying it, i usually can -legally and for free, to see if i like it), or get recomendations from like minded people/freinds, or stuff that's cited (by the artist) as being an influence on what i already know that i like.

While there are a few reviewers individually I find generally jive with my tastes, I mostly ignore all that BS.
Most don't seem to realize it's about the music, not who's cooler than who...

I agree...i really liked Jesse's first album "the fine art..."...didn't really give the 2nd one as much attention. I'll probably still purchase the new one anyway.
On another note...the new Arcade Fire is simply AMAZING.

Yeah, Jesse is great. Guess I just grew to like his voice (Sorry, FB! ;))
Good to hear! I saw Arcade Fire live never having heard of them before. What a show! I was an instant convert.

I don't like Jesse's covers that much - except the Jim Croce one ;)
I really like it when he just does his own stuff
Man, Arcade Fire are suweeping the nation right now -- absolutely huge endorsement in Trib recently

Please say that wasn't the band I saw on SNL last week. I got about a minute into it and had to turn the tv off before it totally wrecked my buzz.

Jesse's fun but lyrically he just doesn't do it for me. He wants to be wittier than he is.

Yep, I agree with all that, oh pointy headed one. Maybe I should have said "wanted" to like. You know, Ryan's buddy, lots of RA fans love him etc. I really wanted to like him & I do quite admire his songwriting. It's that voice!!!
I suppose it's probably one of those love or hate voices, a bit like Dylan's.
I personally love Dylan's voice but Jesse's? Pass the cotton wool please!

Don't think I've ever been so dissapointed with a support act than when Jesse supported Ryan back in 2002. Since he came with the Ryan endorsement I was expecting sooooo much more that was there. Derivitive songs delivered in a derivitive manner - I bought the 1st album hoping the songs would be better with a band.....errr not really. I bought Heat cos I saw it 2nd hand for £5.....didn't get past the 1st track.
I'll probably pick the new one up in a couple of years time when it's in the Bins...just cos of the Ryan connection.
As for reviewers - the key is finding one who's somewhat in sync with your tastes, or possibly a magazine that generally promotes stuff you like - Uncut here in the UK would be the closest to that for me. Ultimately there's no subsitute for listening in yourself and in these days of ahem.. widely available digital music - there's mucho opportunity for that!
