View Full Version : anyone DiG! on Brian Jonestown Massacre?
so i saw that movie DiG! a few months ago and have since gotten way into Brian Jonestown Massacre. they have lots of CD's so i still haven't heard it all but i love the stuff i've tracked down so far.
i'd highly recommend:
Give it Back
Take it from the Man!
Their Satanic Majesties Second Request
Thank God For Mental Illness
(all from 1996-97. just great great stuff)
interestingly enough, the film (while great) is probably a bit slanted and shows him (Anton Newcombe) as more of an unstable asshole than he probably is. talk about meltdowns, this guy is hilarious.
i wonder if Ryan knows this dude, especially since ryan seems to dig SanFran, i'm sure their paths have crossed. funny, peeps have labled Anton similarly as Ryan: "prolific," "Too prolific," "shambolic," "derivative," and other crap that might seem true on the surface to media wankers but it's all fuckin meaningless in the presence of the actual tunes even if that's just listening to the albums at home. the songs. the albums. everyone claims that that's all that should matter but too often we get stuck with descriptions and labels about it.
either way, BJM is some great great shit and you should all check out the albums i mentioned. i think there's even a website where you can DL it free directly from the band.

I bought the DVD a year ago and immediately downloaded 4 albums. The Ballad of Jim Jones is a great song.
yea, the DVD just gives snippets of songs and it's hard to tell what's what. i DL'd one Dandy's album, and it was okay. but Anton's stuff is just amazing.
anyone else like these guys?
great stuff.
Yep, me! Immediately after you started this thread I started listening & downloading. So, I need to say thank you, really......... Great band!
cheers mate!
yea, the four i mentioned are stellar. others are also good. and i haven't heard them all!
i was all over them listening CONSTANTLY for a while, but haven't listened in a couple months. just heard Give It Back in the car the other day and it reminded me.

the one Kees mentioned is good, but it's a collection/retrospective. which is good in some ways, but i know some people are "original album" people.

It's not really that slanted of a take on him. A friend of mine saw Jonestown at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis 5 or 6 years ago and yelled out a song he wanted to hear. Anton freaked out for some reason, brought him onstage and tried to fight him. Of course this was during Anton's heroin using, paranoia time so that could explain it. By all accounts I've heard Anton has mellowed out quite a bit recently.
That being said, Bringing It All Back Home Again is one of my Fav's. It's a little more country-ish than his other stuff but excellent. Listening to it, it's easy to see where Peter Hayes got the ideas for the BRMC record "Howl."

BJM is an amazing band!! Glad to see others appreciating them. I think all of their albums have merit, so I don't think you can go wrong with any one of em. Anton is definitely a character! Saw them in Philly a few years back and had the chance to talk with him a bit....nice guy, but intense!
