Easy Tiger review from Dutch "Oor" magazine

Easy Tiger (LOST HIGHWAY/UNIVERSAL)

Ryan Adams geldt als een majeur talent, maar het eerste meesterwerk laat nog steeds op zich wachten, al kwam zijn solodebuut Heartbreaker van zeven jaar terug er dicht bij in de buurt. Daarna volgde een reeks van zeven sterk wisselvallige albums, waaronder liefst twee dubbelaars, die bij lange na niet zijn totale productie schijnen uit te maken. Achter al die kennelijke urgentie en inspiratie schuilt echter ook een zekere zelfgenoegzaamheid, temeer daar de gewezen voorman van Whiskeytown gespeend lijkt van de nodige zelfkritiek.

Wijsheid komt nochtans met de jaren, want inmiddels over de dertig doet hij het naar verluidt wat kalmer aan met de genotmiddelen, hetgeen wordt bevestigd door de afsluiter I Taught Myself How To Grow Old van het al even veelzeggend getitelde Easy Tiger. Voorheen gedreven door woeste emoties over de onbeteugelbare gang van zaken in zijn turbulente privéleven, verraadt Adams nu een bepaalde berusting in bijna gelouterd te noemen zinsnedes als ‘Where we are strong, by tomorrow we will grow weak and disappear’.

Variërend van ferme rock via melodieuze neo-country tot introspectieve folk vormen de dertien liedjes van gemiddeld zo’n drie minuten bovendien een verrassend uitgebalanceerd geheel, mede dankzij het gedisciplineerde spel van The Cardinals onder aanvoering van rootsrocker Neil Casal.

Tot een werkelijk origineel stilist zal Adams misschien nooit uitgroeien, maar Easy Tiger kan wel degelijk op zichzelf staan als een dwingende bekentenisplaat van een ontnuchterde dertigplusser die een beetje zielig zijn wonden zit te likken.

Ryan Adams kun je op grofweg twee manieren bezien. Als de man van de overdaad, die ieder flard op plaat zet en –net als Prince in de jaren negentig– vooral liefhebbers doet afhaken omdat ze niet meer kunnen bijhouden hoe dat oeuvre als een zelfrepeterende breuk uitdijt. De arme afhakers, ze hebben veel fraais gemist de afgelopen jaren. Want je kunt al de platen ook beschouwen als de kans tot goud graven: meesterwerken maakt Adams niet, wel platen vol meesterlijke nummers. Op het compacte Easy Tiger (dertien nummers van drie minuten) geen aanzetten of demo’s, maar liedjes, zo af als liedjes maar kunnen zijn. Met refreinen om in te verdrinken, vol mooie zinnen, en deze keer zonder relationeel zelfmedelijden. De reden laat zich raden, wanneer Adams zingt: “It takes two where it used to take one.” Later dit jaar zal een cd-box van Ryan Adams verschijnen met tientallen nummers die hij ook nog heeft geschreven. Dat lijkt opnieuw overdaad. Maar als ze van een vergelijkbaar kaliber zijn als die op Easy Tiger, is het vooral weldaad.
