Today I bought the latest issue of a German magazine for alternative music called VISIONS. They did an interview with Ryan Adams and summerized it in a small but interesting article.

It cost me some time to translate the most interesting quotes given by Ryan in this interview from German into English but I think it was worth it. Please excuse any mistakes!

At that time we needed a cover motive very quick. I already had a lot of vicodin and sparkling wine inside me, so I went to the bath room and took an absolute record quantity of heroin and coke, five minutes before the photo was made. I had never been this high before. Look, I don't have any pupils any more at all.

Personally, I only like country music when I'm drunk. However I do like the structure, because it is very simple. The sound is like punk. Not punk like the Sex Pistols or Green Day but qick, efficient rural hardcore...

A dick with asshole lyrics

I had done an album called "Love is Hell" which the record company didn't like very much. That's why I had to record an entire bullshit-album in order to make them release it.

...a strange mixture of R'n'B and English pop music, which felt good

I asked myself what is the biggest, dumbest album I could do? What are the most dumbest lyrics I could live with? That's when "Rock 'n' Roll" occured to me. I felt like a punk band which did their sell out record. You want a hit album? I'll give you a hit album! And the best thing was: I liked this learning-disabled shit! It was like the songwriter inside me turned into a fastfood cook. One Hit album, please! It's on it's way! The mere guitar solos, it's a real scream! I made this record in ten days!

This dick had written, that he was glad, that I had injured myself, because now I could not longer masturbate to pictures of Jack White.

I make music to make the people feel better and to contribute something to this storyteller tradition. Not to hurt them with it. I don't really like Sting's music but I don't whish a traffic accident to him because of that. It is ok to have manners and at the same time work in the rock buisness.

I enjoy playing death metal. My other band is called Werewolph. And you can really hurt people with that.

Interesting that a recent interview was so focused on LIH/RnR stuff, but I always found that period very interesting. Many thanks for posting.

Yes, you are right! I was also very surprised to find all those statements about "Rock 'n' Roll" and "Love is Hell". But I really enjoyed reading it cause it seems that this was not one of those usual interviews with simple questions that have been asked a thousand times before.

Ah it's really a shame that I can't translate the whole article and share it with you...but that would cost me hours...

Bye,

Udo
