Can fans of either point me to a good first album.
Ta
That's better, Chris (no, just joking!). Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks are/were great bands.
UT made four albums, all recently reissued with bonustracks, but maybe you'd best start with '89/93: An Anthology', a sort of best of. And if you can lay your hands on a live-show, don't hesitate. Full of energy.... You can find some here:

The Jayhawks made some very nice albums. Try Hollywood Town Hall, or Tomorrow the green grass, or Rainy Day Music. Think Rickenbackers, think Byrdslike harmonies, but with occasional sonic boosts.
And then let us know what you think.....

Ta Keesy :)
The accoustic Uncle Tupelo Factory Buddy mentions in the Dylan movie thread is called March 16-20 1992, and it is indeed very good. Almost only Jay Farrar en Jeff Tweedy, they left their drummer at home while recording in Athens GA in Peter Buck's (REM) studio.

Is it worth leaving the anthology and just going for the albums....just thinking in terms of if I get well into them it might spanner the albums a bit?
I heard and liked No Depression so?
If I was to just go with the albums what would be the best opener and what starter should I take on the Jayhawks?
I just don't know, my hovercraft is full of eels you see.
I will bag your recomendations from ebay or amazon.
If you like No Depression you will like the other three too. Then buy the albums, and don't bother about the anthology, the four re-issues cover everything or almost everything that's on there.
Just take them chronologically: No Depression, Steel Feel Gone, March 16-20 1992 (the acoustic one) and Anodyne.
As for the Jayhawks: I started with Hollywood Town Hall, and loved it instantly. So try that one, or else Tomorrow the green grass or Rainy Day Music.
And after that, Chris: Golden Smog, Son Volt, Wilco................

Very cool. For what it's worth my favorite UT album is Still Feel Gone. I know quite a few people that might agree with me too. It's BADASS.

I can never decide on my favorite UT album.
Whichever one I'm listening to is a favorite at that moment.
Jay and Jeff were so good together.

Jay and Jeff were so good together.
Amen to that. However I believe that both of them are doing great on their own nowadays, maybe their best work yet.

Still Feel Gone is the only UT album I haven't got yet, only because I haven't seen the remaster cheap yet (yeah, I'm a tightass).
But still get that one though - because it has 'Gun' on it. One of Tweedy's most kickass songs, including all the stuff he's done with Wilco.

Get it when you can, totally worth it.
Sticking to the rest of the thread, I'm slowly getting into the Jayhawks. I like the sound a lot and the songs are really good but nothing has hit me that hard yet. I'm thinking it probably will though, kinda like Ryan did (took some time for me).
