Strange computer sound problem

So my sound randomly turned off tonight. I tried restarting, checked all my settings, tried different programs, ran through the windows troubleshooting, but there doesn't seem to be a good reason why.

It happened when I opened up desktop properties to change a background, if that helps.

Any ideas?

Not to do with background changes, but if you loaded up/downloaded a tune in real player and then turned the sound down it can lower the sound from your speakers and not register in the via desktop/windows or via the sound card settings....

But you probably didn't do that.

Is anything playing at all?

Can you play anything via differing players such as winamp?

Do you get cpu bleeps on boot in safe mode?

I do get CPU beeps when I unplug the AC Adapter. Nothing else is playing.
