Re: RA - Verizon Ampitheater Houston - 15th June 2005
I was at this show too. also was at the New Orleans HOB show 2 nights before, and the Austin show the next night. Ryan didn't say a word to the audience (seriously, not one - except "Thanks, good night." at the very end). It was a weird show. No introduction, no banter, no break, just song after song until he said good night.
at the time I figured it was because:
1. In NO, he was obviously pissed because the crowd was loudly chattering through the entire set. even during his solo piano stuff. he told everyone to shut up a couple of times, and kind of stormed off at the end of the show.
2. The Houston Press had written an article before that week about what a prat he was on stage, and how he always broke into asshole rants, etc.
so I figured he just decided not to give them any ammo and let the music do the talking.
Incidentally, the austin show 2 nights later was "fun, jokey ryan" with great audience interaction (check the "Austin Improv" from that show, and the funny "Cold Roses" amp failure and resume from the middle).
So that week we got the full spectrum of Ryan behavior:
1. NO = foul mood Ryan
2. Hou = somber/serious musician Ryan (with awesome guitar by RA & JP)
3. Austin = the joker and all-out happy Ryan
I remember at the time thinking that the Houston show actually had the best music, but the austin gig was the most fun...
