Which was the strat that possibly used to belong to Dylan?

Re: Ryan Adams Strat

Is it just me, or does it seem odd that the only option to provide RA with a Strat was to assemble one from pieces. Back then you could get a new American Strat and upgrade the pick-ups and still be under $1,000. I guess I understand if the plan was to smash it on stage Townshend style, otherwise...

Other than the value of having RA embrace the neck, it is pretty much worthless.

Worthless? RA obviously has a huge collection of guitars and can play anything he wants, but on the last few tours of the cardinals when he wasn't playing peanut and wanted a solid-body sound he went with this one.....There has to be something special about it.

As for the Fender....100 dollars including shipping. That's it.
Actually no I didn't see that one...I'm not that interested in promos unless theres different mixes or songs only found on that particular cd. If its just a cdr of something I already have on regular cd then I am usually not too interested on most occasions. I do remember seeing that you had that mix up though with wilco and RA, did you get those from eil?

I agree. This is one good sounding Strat or he wouldn't have played it so much. I remember reading that he normally didn't care much for strats but his "new" black one was a "monster".

He also used a sunburst strat during that time, with dots on it.

Well, I have good company to back that comment. The guy who went to that Strat said, "dunno-it was never mine was a techs- & what a piece of shit guitar- i wouldn't pay $ 5 for it. Wont tune, awful action, beware." I chose "worthless" over "piece of shit."

As an owner of a Strat, beyond the action (which he said sucked), the sound quality is based primarily on the pick-ups. The rest is controlled by the effects pedals and amplifier... and of course the player.

My opinion is only based on my experience with a Strat and RA's assessment. If you feel differently, I respect your opinion. The bidding starts at 3 grand.

I'm not trying to make it seem like it's worth 3 grand. It sure is NOT if we are talking spareparts ect. I've owned A LOT of different guitars through the last 20 years, (two of them Strats) and I just don't agree that it's all about the pickups. Wouldn't you agree that the wood has some meaning to the sound??? Anyways I'm just surprised that he would use a "shitty" guitar so much. Why would he if it was SUCH a bad guitar??

Peace :-)

I think the wood does have a lot to do with the sound, especially with hollow-body and semi-hollow-body guitars like Peanut. The resonation definitely affects the tone. In the case of the Strat, it is probably the lack of resonation that results in the cleaner/sharper sound. Don't get me wrong, I love my Strat. I'm just saying that a Strat that was cobbled together, probably isn't anything all that special sound-wise. That seems to have been confirmed by the guy who played it.

I'm not sure why he played that one, as opposed to another one. And I don't know the story behind his relationship with his tech. It's pretty clear that they had a falling out at some point. I'm basing that on the tech's "temper tantrum" comment in the posting, and RA's comment about the guitar. Maybe at one time they were buds and he played it because his bud made it for him. Don't know. In any event, he didn't value the strat enough to hang on to it, and "piece of shit" doesn't indicate any fond memories.

I think it would be cool to have it hanging on display and to be able to say that RA played it on this, that, and the other thing. But not 3 grand cool.

No bids yet and less than a day left. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I remember reading this exact same thing.

As another "guitar nerd", one that builds (assembles) all his own guitars, I have to say this. I saw Ryan and the Cardinals a few years ago at The Brady in Tulsa. We ate at a Mexican place across the street before the show. We were sat right by the window, and it seems like the whole band walked right by. I know for sure Ryan, Graboff and Brad were there. We were like giddy school girls and had to restrain ourselves from running out and harassing them. Anyway, Ryan played that strat at this show, and I remember several times during the show thinking that he had the best tone that night that I had ever heard. EVER. It inspired me to build my own strat. I usually don't like them. Don't care for the way they feel.

Re: Ryan Adams Strat

I hated strats for ever until I rescued a MIM from a tweeker. The guy was in my local music shop trying to sell it. It looked beat to crap because the dude tried to strip the lacquer off by picking at with his finger nails. But nothing else was touched at all. They didn't want it. I offered him $50 with the plan of re-building it. Took it home, plugged it in and fell in love with the trashy noise this thing gave off. I have not touched a thing on it. Guess my story isn't typical, but it goes to show that tone is really only important to the person playing the guitar. At one point Ryan probably loved the way this franken strat sounded then one day decided the thing was a POS. Who knows.

M - totally on board with this. Again I'll join the I'm not a great Strat lover but you cannot undervalue their status and playability. To me, odd or even crappy guitars give (when played by a good guitarist) their own or unique sound. Otherwise its all Eric Clapton isn't it? God, the amount of 'good' frankenstein guitars that have passed through this house (one of my friends was a guitar tech) probaly saved my bands mucho filthy lucre.
