Counting Crows cover 'Winding Wheel' as a bonus track to their new album

Hi all,

Just found out that Counting Crows have done a cover of Ryan's 'Winding Wheel' on their new album full of covers 'Underwater Sunshine'. It is not in the regular tracklisting, but for pre-orders it will apparently be available through Platomania.nl, probably amongst others.

I've heard the whole record on Spotify already and I must say I do like it. It includes covers from Gram Parsons, Fairpoint Convention, Teenage Fanclub, Travis, Bob Dylan/The Byrds and the Faces amongst others. I am curious how the Ryan cover turned out.

Has anyone heard it yet?

They have played it live before way way back in the day. Come Pick Me Up too.
I haven't heard the new recording of it though, and didn't know it would be included on this new covers album, so cool!

adam duritz posted a solo acoustic cover of it online at one point for Valentine's Day 2011. i have that in my iTunes and listen to it once in a while.

Actually, Adam Duritz and his guitar player David Immergluck of Counting Crows played most of these covers, including 'Come Pick Me Up' and 'Winding Wheel' at the infamous annual 'Shim Sham Shows' back in the day. The show where Adam covers Ryan is pretty much the reason I discovered Ryan in the first place. Later I've heard Adam insert 'Come Pick Me Up' in the middle part of 'Round Here'. That version of that song was played at the (televised) Rock Am Ring festival I believe and one of the nicest versions of it I can remember.

Adam has also played 'Oh My Sweet Carolina' solo on piano occasionally.

The other bonus tracks are live versions. I think it's likely that this is a mastered version of the recording from Shim Sham 2001.
