Re: 12/05/04 Paris, France - La Cigale

Great gig - Ryan on good form as usual (as per recently anyway) - despite a few twitches due to not being happy with the sound levels and such things like the ultra squeaky toilet door.

Disrespectful crowd in my opinion though - bit chatty and had people leaning over the stage to take photos etc. A coupleof girls stood by/sat on the stage texting too. Annoying! Was thiking Ryan might react but infact he didnt.

Great stuff Ryan

Front row. Good show. Greatness in some songs, I especially liked When will you come back home, Mother, Chains of love, Please do not let me go.
Noisy crowd somewhat annoying, plus noisy theater (wooden floors /stairs and toilet door).

My first show this time, enjoyed it.
Also nice meeting some RAA folks.

Cheers from Amsterdam!

Re: 12/05/04 Paris, France - La Cigale

Also front row, fun night in general. Ryan seemed to be in a good mood, the squeaking of the door didn't really seem to bother him that much, it actually made him smile in the middle of some songs. At some point I was thinking, wow there's a baby in the venue making soft baby noises, when moments later Ryan pointed out the same but then realised it was the toilet door squeaky noise.

There wasn't as much tuning as I thought there would be and even when he did have to tune, it wasn't bothersome. He had some tiny issues with the sound monitor on his left side, so eventually he decided to redecorate the stage and just put them further away from his left ear.

Enough has been said about the setlist I think. Honestly, it's a good combination of songs and surely...we would all like to hear that one or two other special song(s), but for people who only see him once on a tour, this is a fine fine setlist.

Ashes & Fire is still as good live as the first time I heard it. There's something about his guitar playing and voice that hits it so right in that song. If I am a stranger I also really enjoyed hearing live again. His piano playing is as good as ever. I believe it was Rescue Blues where in the middle he mixed it up a little playing a tiny different bit hitting some other keys, it sounded lovely.
Do I Wait was as powerful as ever, wow...do I love that song!

When Will You Come Back Home, Why Do They Leave and then English Girls Approximately is a powerful trio of songs played.
The cat song is fun, but I'd personally rather have him play a real song. Mother was amazing though and a great ending.

As I had been listening to Jason Isbell before going to Paris and really enjoyed his songs, I was really looking forward to him as support, but something didn't click in Paris. Call me silly, but it might have been his earring, huge MF ring on his middle finger and attitude altogether that didn't seem real. I couldn't get into the songs like I did on record.
During his set, my eyes rolled to the clock on stage, exactly when the time changed from 7:59 to 8:00. Quietly I pretended there were 2 minutes of silence at 8pm like in Holland for Rememberance day.

Back in Amsterdam now, one more show tonight in my hometown. See you all there!

Re: 12/05/04 Paris, France - La Cigale

just back to Uk from Paris.

Great show, queued to ensure a good spot.

Got both books as they were signed, and each had a message in French - great attention to detail.

Also, unlike the second London show - The Shit Volume 2 were all signed, so had to pick up one!!

Not many venues give you such an amazing after show experience of walking behind it up the steps to Sacre Couer.

Great city, great show

I was there too. I've been listening to him for five years now and it was the first time I saw him live. He's so incredible. I had chicken skin when he sang Ashes And Fire. This guy is a genious, he has such a charisma.

Did someone record this one?

I think we must be getting pretty close to a quality Acoustic Covers EP/Mini Album.

Re: 12/05/04 Paris, France - La Cigale

Hi there,

Long time lurker, first time poster here...

just reading the posts about the Paris gig back in May and couldn't see a live recording of it anywhere on the site:

I was generously given a full audio of the show, shortly after the gig, if anyone was still looking for the show?

Just offering it up on the off-chance,

Cheers,
Andy
