Notes: Second ever taping, went well I thought (cheers Dave for the generous loan of the preamp). Band on top form, but crowd full of arseholes. Meh.
If anyone wants to try matrixing this with the Koko soundboard, then by all means do so. Enjoy!
Tis a pleasure, Mr JohnC, sir! I'm glad to be able to give something back, seeing as how the fine efforts of everyone involved in this site got me to start taping in the first place.
bob2006 thanks for the recording
i'll be in touch re the matrix!
Thanks for this Bob2006,...I'm super interested to hear how loud the audience chatter is on your recording. They were super chatty from were I was standing on the floor at Koko.
Personally, I'm not too sure about value of a Matrix if the audience noise is prominent at a gig. The Soundboard recordings are actually Matrix recordings as Ryan's sound team use two fixed mics in there mix, positioned just above the desk...
Gah.... (Sh)itish Telecom have clamped down on my upload speeds again. Hmph. This is about as quick as it's going to get for the rest of the day, I'm afraid.
Anyhoo, the chatter is pretty impressive, especially at the beginning... I very gradually moved about 10-15 feet during the course of maybe 5 songs, and ended up right next to the board, all the while trying to look subtle without my mics pointing anywhere other than straight at the stage. If only open taping was the norm over here...
Anyhoo, even if this source is just used to capture a bit more of the vibe - especially during Winding Wheel - then it's all good.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that. I always imagined tapers putting their own mics up on the stage, and I always wondered how it worked with them being at the soundboard and the mics being on stage. Haha, well awesome, now I know.

Thanks for the info.
No problemo Tremulant.....
At Ryan shows over the last few years the Soundman has used two mics on a stand that record the Audience and band from the desk. This feed is then mixed into the overall board recording. Funky, JohnC or Joel will be far better positioned than me to explain the full techical aspects of this.....but, the end result is a pretty darn good recording, far better than a plain soundboard would be.....
