We didn't stay there to eat, there was nothing on the menu that appealed to the girls, we walked down the street to a bistro called Balthazar to have burgers, which was excellent.

I think I saw you and your kids. My wife and I had our baby there. We got a great picture of Ryan and my family. Ryan and Neal could not have been more gracious.

Balthazar is a very popular restaurant.

9:00 PM

an interesting day, as we all know by now...the weather made it possible for a number of people to catch the extended and delayed performance at the cafe, but unfortunately it resulted in the cancellation of the 6:00 PM sculpture garden gig, which I was supposed to be at...as a result, I headed into the city later, and after making a brief stop in Whitestone to drop off a 10/31 Phil ticket for a friend, I arrived downtown around 8:30 PM for the 9:00 PM event...wspten has done an excellent job of describing the evening, which was an invitation event...arriving around 9:00 PM, I found Neal and Jon outside and headed upstairs soon after...the space was more like an apartment with high ceilings than a gallery and was a surprise even to the band members...at that point, only Chris and a few others had arrived...a warm and friendly vibe was present, and there were several boxes of pizza from Lombardi's, as well as beer, wine, and soda waiting...I was introduced to Chris and Brad, who I had not met previously, and had a few drinks...the room slowly filled up and the crowd included Jesse Malin and Johnny T...as mentioned, everyone was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting...two chairs with microphones, a single snare drum, and a bass rig for Spacewolf were set up in the rear of the space, fully set up and plugged into a mixer...a large painting of Ryan's was the backdrop...no cardinology music or release material to be heard or seen...unfortunately, the planned performance did not occur, as Ryan was delayed and only stayed for a bit once he got there...he was dressed in a shirt and tie, with a blazer and jeans...he left suddenly...people waited but around 11:30 PM, Ryan's guitar tech (I think) went to the stage set-up and retrieved Ryan's guitar case...oh well, as mentioned by wspten, this was a nice night that had the potential to be an unforgettable evening...it was not without some music, however, as Neil took out his recently acquired 1957 Gibson J50 and riffed on the Stones, the reggae roots tune, "There's a Reward For Me", as performed by Joe Higgs, and some of his solo material...this was not a performance, but just a demonstration of the guitar, which sounded amazing, even over the stereo that was playing for the party...a rich balance of treble and bass, with full-throated voice and projection, the guitar is beautifully aged and amazing to handle...this is the only acoustic that was used by Neal during the Cardinology sessions...it would have been incredible to hear it played alongside of Ryan...you lucky cafe people!

I feel bad posting this as I / others were anticipating it and was at the spot where the gig was to be... it was a private loft style place above an art gallery with about 50 or so people. It had a really great vibe and there were candles all over and free booze along with some excellent Lombardi's pizza. Yes, band members were present when I arrived at 9ish but no Ryan... Ryan arrived about 10:30 and stayed for 30 minutes and then left. That is fine...there was no show which was billed but Ryan did get me excited when he stated on the "cave" that there would be an electric performance tonight (which some chairs were set up for and some amps as well). I guess it was not meant to be... I would say, if this had gone down it would have been a night that I would remember in a positive light for a long time but I will still remember it but not with the music I was hoping to get. Anyhow, glad he treated all you to a wonderful afternoon of music and will just have to wait for my fix come Friday at the Appolo....

I have at least that many reasons for wanting to move there. (Though I don't suppose the Yankees are on your list. )
