Birmingham, AL 03/06/09
Just wanted to give any out-of-towners a heads up that if you're planning on getting a hotel in B'ham that night, you better book now. B'ham is hosting the United States vs. Switzerland 1st round match up of Davis Cup tennis that weekend and many hotels in the area are already booked. I'll be seeing Andy Roddick, Roger Federer and Ryan Adams all in one day!!!!!!!!!!:23:

Re: Birmingham, AL 03/06/09
Not to piss in anyone's corn flakes, but Federer has cancelled his Davis Cup appearance. Folks are dumping Bham Davis Cup tickets left and right, so hotel rooms may be opening up that weekend.
Also, I'm looking for 3 RA tickets for the Bham show if any has or knows someone that has extras.

Fair Haired Gal,
Based on your posts I went and booked the closest (I think) hotel which had availabilty at that time.
Alta Vista Hotel & Conference Center at 260 Goodwin Crest Drive in Birmingham.
Not sure if it is walking distance or not, definitely close so a short cab ride. Are there any bars/restaurants etc around the venue you could share some info on?
Thanks KINDly

There won't be many dining options open that are close to the AL Theater. Most of the restaurants in that area are only open for the weekday lunch crowd. The 5 Points South (southside) area of town has bars and restaurants, as well as the Lakeview area. I've never heard of that hotel, but I wouldn't count on walking around much in downtown B'ham, especially at night. It's a bit dodgy, to say the least.
JCGiff- I know about Federer. It's a shame, but I've seen him several times before and that just means the USA has a lot better chance of making it to the second round.

Re: Birmingham, AL 03/06/09
well i'm coming in friday and will hopefully be in Bham by 7 at the latest (crossing fingeres for earlier). forget food, i guess. any bars near? be willing to meet whomever is up for it. my gf and i will most likely take my Vibe, so i could transport a couple of folks from the bar to the show if needed.

That's a good call about Lakeview, I live in Bham as well and we head down there a pretty good bit. I can't think any good bars around the Alabama Theatre, and 5 Points has gotten very sketchy lately. A lot of crime. I'll be at the show, although I will be going solo, as the wife can't make it. I'm looking forward to having a few beers and watchig the Cards play. Good way to spend a Friday night.

Re: Birmingham, AL 03/06/09
I see a few "any cool bars around the Alabama Theatre" questions and thought I should chime in. there is not much in the area of the theatre now except sketchiness. There is fortunately one cool bar that I would highly recommend and it happens to be right down the street about a block and a half or so. Check out the Speakeasy... can't wait till Friday!

Re: Birmingham, AL 03/06/09
I'll probably be at Oak Hill Bar in Homewood pre-game. We'll just take a cab to the theater from there. Afterwards, probably go to Innisfree in Lakeview.

I saw Speakeasy mentioned and I've never personally been there but heard this morning that a local radio station is holding a Cardinals pre-party there with ticket giveaways and gift certificate giveaways. Here are the details:

Two other bars of mention in the downtown area are Metro Bistro and The Wine Loft. Both are within walking distance of the theatre.

Re: Birmingham, AL 03/06/09
My favorite joint in town is Bottle Tree. Would be a great place to have some good food and drink before the show. They are a music venue at night. In fact, if anyone is sticking around on Saturday night you can join Fair Haired Gal and me there at the Blitzen Trapper show! Here's their site and the menu button is to the left:

I forgot about the Metro Bistro, that's not a bad spot. I might have to check out the Speakeasy, never been there.

I just clicked on the link you posted, the Cardinals pre-party seems pretty cool. I noticed they are doing something similar at The Black Market bar at the Colonade. I'm over in Cahaba Heights so that's pretty close. I might have to check one of those out.
