Indianapolis Motor Speedway Guitar

Does anybody know the story behind the guitar or how it came about? Perhaps why he choose to put that on his guitar? I'm from Indy and quite curious is all. Thanks!

i don't know where he got the decal or if there's any significance, but he's had that guitar with that sticker for a long time. maybe even from his whiskeytown days. being a native hoosier, i always dig that guitar. it was a cool tip of the cap to letterman when he used it for come pick me up too.

I have wondered why he doesn't play that more often. Maybe due to it's age, it isn't in good shape for live situations. I think it's a '74 Guild. Anyway, hope he breaks out more acoustic stuff on his upcoming tour.

No... there is a show or interview where he talk about it. I think he referred to them as elephants.

I think that was during the first Gold tour Fall 2001, he talked about it at the first LA HOB show 11/15/2001 I think.

well he used it in 05 or 06 on letterman, so it could not hae been the guild

Yeah he was playing it during a performance on letterman when the Elizabethtown soundtrack and Jacksonville City Nights was coming out. If I ever meet him, I'll ask him the story. I mean I am a native hoosier an all.

I'm just listening to this show now. He starts talking about the guitar/UA after Oh My Sweet Carolina and he says he's going to retire the guitar after this show.

Hi! So, um, I had the privilege of playing this guitar for about 5 or 6 years and United Airlines finally decided to fuck it up...my baby! So this is, um, I wrote this Whiskeytown record Pneumonia on this guitar, I wrote Heartbreaker on this guitar, I wrote Gold on this guitar, and I toured it for like, about 3 years, and this is its last show tonight. It has to go home. It got fucked up. So, this whole show is just for my baby. It's the last show. That bastard! And I'm havin' to lug this thing down there, and they're like "Don't worry man, we'll take perfect care of it!" And I'm like 'yeah', and there's like these elephants coming in, you know?
