Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
these sets all look amazing, but for the ticket price we should all be getting more IMO. I am not hating, I am still going to a bunch more shows, I just want more for my money.

yeah....my friend called on her way out of the show (her first), and said while it was truly amazing and she loved it, she's not sure she'd spend that much money if he's going to be that volatile.

Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
It's really not a sound investment at this point it would seem. But the thing is, it looked like a bargain if you look at what was being said pre-tour, and look at what they did last summer/fall.

Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
And the frustrating thing was, he said something about working through sound problems but 'we'll just smile and get through it. it's always nice playing here.' and then there was a long pause, and he said 'this is our last song.' played 'a kiss before I go' and they were out of there. the cedar show in the summer was so much more powerful and moving. there really wasn't too much of a connection between the band and the crowd. he seemed to be going through the motions at times-the 'dear chicago' was really rushed, 'let it ride' lacked energy. The backdrop and disco ball were a nice touch, and there were some highpoints-'dear john' and 'shakedown' especially. also, seeing ryan play piano for 'rescue blues' and seeing him play guitar at all were definitely high points(he didn't play guitar at the Cedar show.) But $50 a ticket and we get just over an hour of music-I can't help but feel disappointed.

yeah. good point. i mean, if they were playing in my area at all on this tour, i'd be buying tons of tickets, getting really excited, and for sure enjoying the shows (based on the SBDs i've been listening to), but i'd also be a little annoyed at the brevity of the shows and the general pissiness that seems to go with it. maybe a lot annoyed at 40 bucks for an hour long show.
but yeah, had i been going into these shows blindly, things probably would have been different. i could have been happy with what i got. but after three months of hearing about this 2 set thing and how fucking awesome it was going to be, to be getting 60 minutes of semi-pouty music seems unfair.
i'm 99.9 percent all about standing up for the artist and not criticizing them unless they're setting audience members on fire, but even sitting here just reading these setlists on the internet, i'm starting to understand why lots of you guys have every right to be a little pissed. this is a weird situation.

It does seem to be getting worse than ever. I'm in the camp that thinks 90 minutes of great music is fine (although 2 hours is better) but 65 minutes is bullshit.
Having said that, every time I buy a ticket I know that's a possibility so I'm not complaining. I do feel sorry for people that don't know they're taking their chances on a possible meltdown when they shell out their money, though.

Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
Just about everyone was waiting for an encore, and cheering their hearts out, but after about 3 minutes they turned the lights on. I'm not sure if it was because he was pissed at the sound guy or at the guys screaming from the balcony, but I'm sure they both had something to do with it.

Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
Wow, I didn't hear Ryan say "this is our last song." I had a hard time understanding him the few times he spoke...it sounded a little tinny or something.
What we got was so good. Peaceful Valley and Shakedown especially were awesome! I just can't believe it was that short, though. A guy sitting near me said something like "this feels like the Twilight Zone...concerts can't be that short!" We all just sort of stood there waiting for something else to happen. It ended so abruptly, I still almost can't believe it's over.

Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
first time poster...
... i have to say. thanks to this forum, I was prepared for this concert appropriately. having seen the posts about his actions lately, I wasn't the least bit surprised this happened. He did kind of pull a 180 at the very end there because he seemed rather chipper when he was telling us he'd get through the monitor issues, it was a big change when he then decided that was the end of the night. He DID, however, tell people that when they're shouting at him the whole show he can't hear it, it's just blah blah so it's not even worth it...so of course these morons shout more shit out. based on the last week or so of shows, that would be enough to make him want to pack his stuff up and leave.
I'm mostly disappointed in the crowd, a 65 minute set could be awesome, but MOST of the crowd was aweful. I go to 30 or more concerts a year (not counting local acts) and I've never seen people so aweful. I had the misfortune of being in an aisle seat and it was non-stop people going in and out the whole night...talk about distraction. And everyone was really into the Easy Tiger songs at the very beginning and then there was stampedes and tons of talking every time he played a song that wasn't a sing-along type song off of one of the newer records (so most of the night).
Concerts should be about enjoying the music and appreciating the art of it (those who play can attest that it's a beautiful thing to see a band of great musicians like these guys). I can't understand why people would pay $35-50 and then run in and out of their seat the whole night. You pay $8 for a movie and keep your butt in the seat for 2-3 hours, but you can't respect a LIVE act for 1 or so hours????...I'll never get those people, but I will hate on them.
I still love seeing Ryan, and I don't really blame him...I would have seen the mess that was tonight's concert and just called it in, too.

Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
i wish i had known this was how the tour was going to be before i spent almost $50 for a ticket at two shows coming up...meanwhile louisville during the summer cost under $25 for a long, great show...doesnt make any sense at all...a letdown, really, especially after the first two great shows that opened this leg of the tour...wtf happened?

Re: 9/27/07 State Theater Setlist/Review
Goodnight Rose was awesome, Rescue Blues was cool, Peaceful Valley was amazing, Nightbirds and Dear John were very good, Shakedown raged and shut the crowd up, but the rest was pretty by the numbers. The crowd cannot excuse walking off after 65 minutes though, even with a Summer of '69 shout and the chick who kept yelling for Firecracker. I'm glad I saw the amazing Cedar show this summer or I'd be a lot more put off, as it stands, some great moments, but half the show was phoned in (which doesn't mean it was awful) and too short. Not worth the money overall, I think some elder musician needs to school Ryan on some things about being a performer, instead of being the petulant grade school teacher who punishes the whole class for the misbehavior of a few.
